Let’s have a little recap before we dive into the Second Step of the P.O.P. Method that has played a huge role in taking me from tutoring hobbyist to rocking a multiple 6-figure income…yep, tutoring kids!
P.O.P. stands for PERSON, OPPORTUNITY and PURPOSE.
It’s a simple method I have used over and over during each tutoring session whether it’s with one student at a time or a group of kids.
P.O.P. doesn’t stand for quizzes anymore.
In fact, as a former teacher, I really never liked POP Quizzes. They seemed to be sneaky things meant to make sure one did one’s work. And not really a method to determine true understanding or mastery of knowledge.
I mean really, is there a boss out there (if I’m preparing students for the real world, a boss is what they will encounter) who will give a POP Quiz?
I think not.
Sometimes we must look back so that we can celebrate wins that we wouldn’t otherwise bother to notice and see what improvements could have been made. I think this process of a Year-End Self-Inventory is powerful, telling and vital for my growth.
I have so much more to give than I’ve been giving. I’ve been playing small.
When I want to say “shameful” to the above comment or statement of fact, which is not a criticism of myself but a truth, I realize I have work to do on my inner game.
I think I’ll start with naming her.
Today’s article is going to be short and sweet, yet full of actionable items you can take as you need to use yourself, with your child or in your classroom - or, in your tutoring session.

Okay, now that I’ve stopped play-typing, I know Jessica is secretly laughing at the first line and specifically the word short, so she’s my motivation for NOT making this a novella but an easy post that’s digestible right now.
Diving in.
Fact: Kids aren’t taught productivity.
I resisted for years.
I refused to be involved in the degradation of the written word.
Not because I’m wordy, though as a writer I guess I kind of am, as a teacher, should be, right?
No, it mattered, because to me words have power. And words are so often misunderstood in their unappreciated form, like via text. Let’s just say that texting seemed prone to misunderstanding or miscommunication amplified, to me.
Warning: A tad bit of adult language within.

I had a student who once told me, “You can’t say that to me. My dad’s a lawyer. I’ll sue you!”
My response before I could censor myself was to laugh and say, “I’m a teacher. Sue away. I don’t make anything.”
And literally, that was the honest truth. The only thing he could have, gladly, was my growing mound of student debt.
Our educational system is setup to make you or your child fail and I’m here to say it’s outdated and back-ass-ward.
Now, that’s a bold statement, but if you’re a parent reading this and ever felt like you’re in a rat-race of life or spinning on that hamster wheel only to go… nowhere, you need to keep reading.
There’s a reason you can’t seem to “get ahead in life” and feel behind the eight ball, and it has to do with our educational system.

I’ve already mentioned how important writing your thoughts down will be during these 52 Life Lessons. But writing or journaling is point blank the best thing you can do for yourself.
Seriously, I sound like a broken record and yes, I am also naturally a writer, so you might be thinking Yeah, this is easy for her.
But it’s not.
Not always.
First, let me say that YOU might believe that this image represents YOU in this situation, but guess what?
It doesn't have to be. It shouldn't be. And from this moment on it's simply not.

I hear from wanna-be-tutors all the time, the questions: How do I get hired? How do I find students? How do I get a parent to hire me and pay me money to do math, reading or fill-in-the-blank with their child?
So, Jill, how to get students and actually start tutoring? is a question I am asked often.
Like many, you too may think it's costly to get your business out there.
Or, you might not even know where to start.
Here's the thing.
Biz school or marketing books will tell you to place ads. To definitely get biz cards made but only after you decide on a name and file all your biz license paperwork, open a checking account and maybe even shop for "supplies"! And of course, you'll need a website.
All this before your first client even walks through your tutoring door!
